Thu Oct 29, 2009 9:58 pm ADDON cabins for Tongass X second release |
  |
Hi friends of Tongass X!
Here is my second release of additional cabins. My first release adds cabins for the Sitka area. The second adds cabins for Admiralty Island.
I have added all cabins for both areas which are shown on this site:
http://www.fs.fed.us/r10/tongass/cabins/cabinareamap.shtml
Both archives contains a kml file for Google Earth to find the cabins.
I use FSX Google Earth tracker to place the signs in GE.
I have not used exactly the lat / lon position which is reported but I have placed them as near as possible into the scenery.
Please report me problems if you have some. These little project is my first attempt to add scenery to a commercial product. I hope you enjoy this little addon.
For all who use my first version of Sitka cabins.

I have replaced Samsing cove because it was missplaced.

Hi Folks
Jürgen -
What application did you compress these with please ?
Don't know if this is an issue at my end.
Using WinZip 8.0
I can see the file content listing,
but am unable to extract their content.
EDIT
Winzip Error - unsupported compression method 9
Neither can I extract using XP's native zip extraction.

Hello Jürgen.
many thanks for your efforts, much appreciated!
I'll soon start a sticky thread in this forum with all available add-ons for Tongass X and will add your links to make sure they don't disappear in between all the other threads.
Cheers, Holger

Hey all!
Are there some people who have more 3D models for free which can be used for the cabins or does sombody know a source where I can find some libraries for free? I have much additional models on my PC but these are from other commercial products so they can't be used for Tongass X
I search for small cabins and small additional models like benches, boats, people, water aircraft models and other small things. I think with a bit more of them the scenery becomes more relistic and more alive.
I also plan to add some animated whales you can watch during your flights.
Thanks
Jürgen

Hello Jürgen,
you could check AVSIM's file library and its "Scenery Design" category for suitable freeware object libraries.
As for "more realistic" though the real cabins are very simple affairs. As the photographs on the Forest Service website show there isn't much at these sites other than the cabins themselves and perhaps a woodshack and outhouse. Thus, we deliberately kept our representations of the cabins simple too.
Cheers, Holger

Hello Holger,
Thank you! AVSIM has still problems but I search the web for other ressources.
You are right! Most of the photos of cabins shows only the cabin and nothing else but I think it would be nice to see some people or other small items around the cabins. I have added default FSX objects like boats, people and outhouses but I must use the same model for different locations. I want to bring a little bit more alternation to the scenery. Not totally fictive but more alive. I think a fisherman would be nice or a hunter which looks not like a soldier as the "Ranger" from the default libary.
Cheers, Jürgen

Hi Jürgen,
Nice work on the cabins! This really fills out Sitka and Admiralty.
May I add your cabins to the GE master map with your permission? Your KML files are a good head start to import the locations. I can convert the Forest Service web site decimal co-ordinates to degrees and minutes for accuracy and also add the Forest Service cabin links as well. I was thinking of making the icons the same size and color as the default cabins for consistency, but with a slight variation in the icon symbol to differentiate your cabins from the default and to allow for a clear creditation of your work in the http://tongassge.com/ legend.
Lastly if I could provide links to your downloads as well that would start a nice TFX addon links section too. I'm a bit busy with my day work of late but could easily get this done this week with your OK...
Thanks for the hard work!
-Ed

Hi Ed!
Thats nice! As I have written this is my very first addon and I am happy that it brings fun to other fs simmers!
You can do the steps you has written. The next step for me is to add the cabins for the Petersburg and Wrangell area.
Cheers, Jürgen

Hello Ed,
that's a great offer, thanks!
Just as a heads-up: I found that the coordinates given on the USFS website aren't always correct and I had to cross reference with their maps, my AK topographic mapbook, Google Earth, or online topographic maps. If Jürgen did those checks already then perhaps you can just decompile his placement bgl file and grab the cabin coordinates from it.
Cheers, Holger

Hello Holger
Hello Ed,
I have tried to place the cabins to the coordinates the USFS site offers but I have found that this coordinates often do not match the scenery. I am not an expert and so I have placed the cabins as near as possible into the scenery. I am sure that the positions are not 100% exactly but I do not raise the claim of an absolutely professsional work. I want to add the cabins as new points pilots can fly and have fun, nothing more. To make the scenery more diversified I have added boats and sometimes also a little jetty where in real live you can't find one. To have fun is my first goal...
I have also find one or two cabins where the position in Ed's KML file do not match the position of the cabin in the scenery. I have replaced the sign but I don't know which cabin this was...
Ed if you want I can sent you the kml and you can compare it with the original one.
I use FSGET to check the position of the cabin using GE as reference.
Cheers, Jürgen
